Miami University Appalachian Studies

Migration brought hundreds of thousands of Appalachians to Ohio's Miami Valley in the 20th century seeking jobs in Cincinnati, Hamilton, Middletown, Dayton and elsewhere. Appalachian Studies explores the rich traditions that came with them, including musical, religious, family and historical experiences that shaped regional and urban Appalachian life. rnrnWe offer free public programs; courses available in Appalachian Studies; and student scholarships supported by local community partners. In addition, the Southwestern Ohio Bluegrass Music Project (co-sponsored by Miami Appalachian Studies, Smith Library of Regional History, Greene County Public Library, and the Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County) explores the region's rich bluegrass heritage, making it accessible to the public and researchers through free public programs and concerts, a traveling exhibit, published anthology of writings, and forthcoming companion recording project (in partnership with Smithsonian Folkways).
