Dr. William Turner: The Harlan Renaissance

Join us on Thursday, September 21st at 4pm in DAAP 3410 for a lecture by Dr. Bill Turner. He will discuss “The Harlan Renaissance,” a book that delves into African American life in Lynch, Kentucky, a U.S. Steel model coal town. The book received the 2022 Weatherford Award for the best nonfiction book about Appalachia and was honored as the best Kentucky history book in 2023 by the Kentucky Historical Society. Dr. Turner, a distinguished academic, holds a B.S. from the University of Kentucky and a master’s and Ph.D. in Sociology and Anthropology from the University of Notre Dame. He has had a remarkable career in academia and was an advisor to filmmaker Alex Haley on the award-winning film “Roots.” The lecture is co-sponsored by several organizations, including the University of Cincinnati’s Office of Equity, Inclusion & Community Impact, School of Planning, and Center for the City, the Urban Appalachian Community Coalition, and the Over-the-Rhine Museum. Don’t miss this opportunity to explore the fascinating history of Lynch, Kentucky, and its significance in African American and urban planning history.
