Bio
Sacred Harp singing is traditional vocal music sung without instrumental accompaniment from the shape note tunebook, The Sacred Harp. The group meets monthly on the 2nd Sunday, 4:30-7:30pm at Community Friends Meeting. Everyone is invited to participate or listen. There is no admission charge, no membership, no audition, no choir director, no rehearsal, and no performance—just singing.
Nineteenth-century tunebooks drew deeply from Appalachian folk hymns and camp meeting music. Appalachian composers and tunebook compilers were embedded in Appalachian musical experience. Today's singers come from all over, but honor the Appalachian roots of the music.
