UACC is kicking off this fall with some exciting news.

Beginning this September  —with our new Appalachian Innovation Grants— we will be working with and learning from Appalachian youth and young adults.

Hello, I am Dale Marie Prenatt, UACC’s Project Coordinator for the Urban Appalachian Leadership Project (formerly known as the Urban Appalachian Project). I am excited to work with UACC to host group leadership development activities, promote community engagement, and to award project stipends. Read our Request for Proposals to learn more.

Like many of you, I am an Appalachian enthusiast who has immersed myself in the region’s stories and struggles for environmental and social justice. Having previously volunteered as a Steward and acted as an intern with the communications group, I feel grateful to officially work with the UACC to support young Appalachian leaders.

I live in Mount Washington in Cincinnati and have a job in a bookstore. I am a storyteller and poet. I am from Logan County, West Virginia by way of east Kentucky and as a girl, I spent many summers with my cousins in Appalachian Pennsylvania. There, it turns out, Appalaysha is a common pronunciation.

I graduated with a theatre degree from Kentucky’s Morehead State, just ten miles from an inactive, low-level radioactive waste disposal site. You may notice that where I’m from in West Virginia, east Kentucky, and northwest P.A., what isn’t being blown up at the seams is getting fracked apart or dug up for pipelines, and otherwise storing toxic waste.

In both the politics and the art of this reality I am a migrant, an Urban Appalachian— dedicated to my home but working in professional capacities outside the official borders. In my professional roles I have supported the development of young leaders and, as with my creative work, I wear my accent on my sleeve.

We hope you, our UACC Stewards and supporters, will help champion the Urban Appalachian Leadership Project, spreading our Request for Proposals far and wide. I will be happy to email, speak with, or meet groups or individuals who request information— just reach out at [email protected].
